The Sunglass Shack opened its doors in the Frandor Shopping Mall in 1973. A group of Lansing eye doctors responded to their patients' need for quality sun eye protection, sold at a service-oriented store with a very knowledgeable staff. They started small with only a few brands and a small number of styles.

The Shack thrived during the 1970's and 1980's becoming one of the areas largest stores of its' kind by providing the highest level of customer care, delivered by one of the most knowledgeable teams found in the industry. In 2005 the Shack continues to thrive as a family owned operation. The commitment to personalized service and maintaining the largest brand selection in Mid-Michigan as well as the largest variety of styles, from fashion to sports-specific and driving is emphasized by Don and Lorie, husband and wife owners. The couple leads a team of knowledgeable consultants to help customers with issues such as choice of proper lens components, selection of the correct style frame, and assurance of a perfect fit with every pair purchased. The commitment to quality products and to a very knowledgeable staff, has helped The Shack to become mid-Michigan's largest sunglass retailer. Through unique new initiatives that base the firms' success upon employee training and achievement, the organization has grown significantly in recent years. The Shack's management team has developed training programs for students interested in learning the science of today's high technology sunglasses, as well as for those desiring to learn what it takes to succeed as a small business person. Students from Michigan State University and Lansing Community College apprentice with, and learn from, the senior team of associates that handle all aspects of the business. Off hours staff meetings are held to discuss the enhancement of almost all aspects of the business, from advertising and technology to purchasing and accounts payable.
